Duncan Gilman: My Hero

A post by Eve.

I'd like to tell you all a little bit about this man, Duncan Robert Gilman, who will soon become my husband.

When I first laid eyes on Duncan (more about how that happened later), I was just excited that he wasn't going to be a professional Jew. Duncan is an amazing Barber-shopper, a wonderful cook, and a calming influence on my life, only some of the reasons I fell in love with him.

Duncan the Barber-Shopper:
If there is one thing in Duncan's life that I might have to compete with, it's his barbershopping habit. Duncan is involved in 2 barbershop choruses, directs a third, and has a quartet that he sings with regularly. And while I received many warnings about how much barbershop he does, and how time consuming it is, I can honestly say, that I love it. Duncan is always singing, and believe it or not, he puts up with my singing along side him. I love music, I love Duncan, when the two combine, I'm a happy camper, I might even think I can sing one of these days.

Chef Duncan:
We have a little deal in this relationship, I cook dinner Monday-Wednesday (mostly because Duncan has barbershop stuff these nights) and Duncan cooks on Thursdays. When I first asked Duncan if he could cook, he said, he heats up well and could make pasta. Given a challenge of preparing a healthy meal after a long day of school and teaching for me, Duncan rose to the occasion. He doesn't believe he can cook, but let me tell you, the man's pretty good in the kitchen. I come home from work to tuna steaks and homemade onion rings, or chicken and homemade potato chips, or, my all time favorite, a Cheese and Corn meal. Duncan and I, in our love for each other are often both CHEESY and CORNEY, and so, the meal Duncan made to celebrate our engagement, was cheesy and corney (mahi mahi, corn on the cob, mac and cheese). A meal with a theme and a mission... not too shabby.

Duncan the Peace Keeper:
If you know me at all, you know I have a tendency to freak out about things when I get stressed out. Would you believe that since I met Duncan I've gotten down to one freak out a month- such an improvement. Duncan is always so calm, in fact, I've never heard him raise his voice. Duncan is always willing to help anyone, no matter how much he has going on, and on top of it, he always does it with a smile. Duncan didn't care that when we met I was dealing with a crisis, or that I was slow to share my heart, he is patient and caring, and, didn't shy away from the hard moments.

The best part about Duncan, is that he makes me the happiest and best Eve I have ever been. We share a love of Judaism and teaching (he teaches 6th grade religious school on the side), and TV and movies (he is a post production editor for cable tv), and family (Duncan has a younger sister and brother). He's the best!
